As November draws to a close, life in the vineyard begins to slow right down. After the vibrant rush of harvest and the colourful show of autumn leaves, the vines are now easing into their winter dormancy. The canopies have mostly fallen away, the canes are bare, and the landscape has taken on that peaceful, wintry stillness that marks the start of the vineyard’s rest period.
There isn’t a great deal happening among the vines at this time of year — and that’s exactly how it should be. Our team is using these quieter weeks to tidy around the vineyard, and prepare for winter pruning, which begins once the vines are fully asleep. In the winery, attention shifts to the young wines maturing slowly in tanks and barrels, where they’re watched over with regular tasting and analysis. It’s a gentle, reflective time in the wine-growing calendar.
Local Happenings: A Touch of Festive Spirit
While the vineyard may be in its slower season, the surrounding area is beginning to buzz with early winter activity.
If you’re exploring the countryside, our nearby shops such as Moolah and Vermeulens in Ellsemere are also well worth a stop this month. Shelves are filling with winter vegetables, hearty homemade preserves, artisan breads, local cheeses, and festive goodies. And of course, a bottle of locally grown wine pairs beautifully with almost anything you’ll find!
A Quiet Season Worth Savouring
Though not much is happening visibly in the vineyard right now, these calm weeks play an important role in the year’s cycle. It’s a time for nature to rest and recharge, and for us to plan ahead for the busy months to come.
If you’re visiting the area, enjoy the slower pace, the crisp air, and a lovely walk around Colemere. And if you’re staying warm at home, we’ll continue to share updates as the season unfolds.
Here’s to a restful end of November — from our vines to your table. 🍷🌿
